While completing her undergraduate degree at UCLA, Nancy volunteered with other students to teach day laborers English at IDEPSCA’s Downtown Community Job Center. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in 2003, she became employed at IDEPSCA as a grant writer and community organizer. After a year and a half, she left IDEPSCA and obtained a master’s in urban planning from UCLA. The Long Beach native currently works in the Stormwater/Environmental Compliance Division for the City of Long Beach Public Works Department.

Began volunteering for IDEPSCA as an English teacher at the Downtown and Pasadena Community Job Centers during her first year at UCLA. After graduating she decided become a union organizer for AFSCME 3299. As a Latina she understood the importance of union organizing because when her mother got a union job as a San Diego Unified School District.

Eden C. Flynn

Eden Flynn is currently pursuing a PhD in Social Sciences and Comparative Education at UCLA. Eden's academic research focuses on grass-roots efforts towards equity-based educational reform in urban public schools. Her dedication to advocating for immigrant rights and workers rights through community organizing is what brought her to IDEPSCA. She most recently worked as the Coordinator for a Southern California Coalition of activists, SoCalCOSH, which seeks to improve working conditions and promote environmental justice in all workplaces and communities. Eden also has extensive training and background in dance, and she believes in the benefits of finding simple ways of incorporating dance into our lives.

Maria de Lourdes González Reyes

Maria de Lourdes Gonzalez Reyes was born in Mexico City. Mother of two daughters and two sons, Maria de Lourdes is grandmother to 10 grandchildren. She loves life and sees her grand kids as the future. Maria de Lourdes appreciates working as a collective, in an ethical manner, and is certain that everyday is an opportunity to build a better life.

Marco Antonio Méndez Rodríguez
Day Laborer,

Born in Puebla, Mexico Marco Antonio Méndez Rodríguez migrated at the age of 20 in November 1981 to Texas to work as a day laborer. In January 1982, Mendez Rodriguez arrived to the City of Los Angeles in search of work on the corner of Sawtelle Blvd. and W. Olympic Blvd. where he stayed for 12 years. He later worked 10 years as a taxi driver and in 2005 came back to the same corner then began attending the West Los Angeles Community Job Center.
